A potting bench takes more abuse than almost any other piece of garden furniture you own. Wet compost gets flung against the back wall, hose spray runs down behind the work surface, and fertiliser dust settles into every open grain of timber. Bare wood soaks all of it up, and within two seasons the back board is soft, stained and starting to lift.
A metal backsplash fixes the problem at the source. Metal siding panels are built to shed water on the outside of a house for thirty years or more, which makes them almost overqualified for a garden bench. They cost very little for the small area you need, they wipe clean with a sponge, and the ribbed profile gives an otherwise plain build a sharp, modern edge.

Why metal siding panels work so well on a potting bench
The appeal is not just that metal looks good behind a row of terracotta pots. It is a genuinely better material for this one specific spot on the bench.
Before you commit to buying a panel, it helps to understand what you are actually gaining over a plywood or shiplap back:
- Water runs off the face instead of soaking in, so the frame behind it stays dry.
- Soil, sap and fertiliser wipe away with a damp cloth rather than staining permanently.
- Factory coatings resist UV fading far better than exterior paint on timber.
- One offcut from a siding job covers an entire backsplash, so the material cost is often close to nothing.
- Magnets stick to steel panels, which turns the backsplash into a tool wall.
That last point is worth planning around. If you use a steel panel rather than aluminium, magnetic strips, hooks and small parts trays will cling to the surface without a single screw hole.
Choosing the right panel for the job
Not every profile suits a piece of furniture. Siding panels are designed for large flat walls, and some of them look out of scale when you cut them down to a two foot strip. These are the four profiles worth considering.
Corrugated
The classic wavy profile is the easiest to find, the cheapest, and the most forgiving to cut because the ribs are shallow. It reads as rustic and farmhouse, which suits a cedar or pine bench beautifully. Choose this if you want the build to feel like it belongs in a kitchen garden.
Ribbed or R-panel
Flat sections separated by tall square ribs. It looks more agricultural and more modern at the same time, and the flat areas between ribs give you a proper surface for mounting hooks. The deeper ribs cast stronger shadows, so this profile carries the most visual weight.
Board and batten
Wide flat panels with raised vertical battens. This is the most contemporary option and it pairs well with a painted black frame. It costs more than corrugated and the deep profile eats into your usable depth, so check your clearances first.
Weathering steel
Corten and similar weathering steels develop a stable rust patina that never needs painting. It looks superb against green planting, but the runoff will stain concrete and light-coloured timber underneath during the first year of weathering. Only use it if you are happy with that.
Whichever profile you choose, pay attention to two numbers. Gauge tells you the thickness, and lower numbers mean thicker steel, so 26 gauge is noticeably more rigid than 29 gauge. For a backsplash that will take knocks from tools and pots, 26 gauge is the sensible choice. The coating matters just as much, so look for G90 galvanised or Galvalume under a painted finish rather than an unspecified budget panel.
Tools and materials
Gather everything before you start, because the metal cutting step goes much faster when you are not hunting for gloves halfway through.
Tools
You will need a drill driver, a circular saw or mitre saw for the timber, a speed square, a tape measure, a pencil, clamps, and a pair of safety glasses. For the panel itself, add electric metal shears or a nibbler if you have access to one, plus heavy work gloves and a metal file.
Timber and hardware
The cut list below builds a bench that is 48 inches wide, 24 inches deep, with a 36 inch work surface and a 24 inch backsplash above it.
- Four legs from 2×4: two front legs at 35 1/4 inches, two rear legs at 59 1/4 inches
- Four long rails from 2×4 at 45 inches, two for the top frame and two for the lower shelf
- Four side rails from 2×4 at 21 inches, again two upper and two lower
- Two backsplash rails from 2×4 at 45 inches, one at the top of the rear legs and one midway
- Five top boards from 1×6 at 48 inches
- Four lower shelf boards from 1×6 at 48 inches
- One metal siding panel, roughly 48 by 24 inches after trimming
- Exterior structural screws, 2 1/2 inch and 1 1/4 inch
- Self drilling screws with EPDM sealing washers, 1 inch, colour matched to the panel
- Aluminium angle or J-channel trim to cap the panel edges
- Galvanising touch up paint
One material warning before you buy. If you use pressure treated lumber for the frame, the copper compounds in it will corrode galvanised steel wherever the two touch. Either build the backsplash frame from cedar, or from painted untreated pine, or run a strip of self adhesive flashing membrane between the timber and the panel.
Building the bench frame
Work through the frame in stages and check for square at every step. A backsplash that sits out of parallel with the work surface is very obvious once the panel goes on.
Step 1: Assemble the two side frames
Lay one front leg and one rear leg on the floor, parallel, with the tops of the rear legs offset upward. Attach a 21 inch side rail flush with the top of the front leg, then a second 21 inch rail 10 inches up from the floor for the lower shelf. Drive two 2 1/2 inch screws through each joint. Repeat for the second side.
Step 2: Join the sides with the long rails
Stand both side frames upright and connect them with the 45 inch rails, front and back, at both the top and shelf levels. Clamp everything before driving screws, and measure both diagonals across the top frame. When the two measurements match, the frame is square.
Step 3: Fit the work surface and shelf
Lay the 1×6 top boards across the frame with a small gap between each one so water and loose soil fall through instead of pooling. Fix each board with 1 1/4 inch screws into the rails below. Do the same on the lower shelf.
Step 4: Frame the backsplash
Run one 45 inch rail between the rear legs at the very top, and a second one roughly halfway between the work surface and the top rail. These two rails plus the rear legs give you a rectangle to fasten the panel to, and the middle rail stops the metal from flexing when you lean on it.
Cutting the metal siding panel
This is the step most people get wrong, and the mistake is almost always the same one. An abrasive angle grinder disc is fast, but it burns the protective coating along the cut and throws hot steel filings across the rest of the panel, where they embed in the finish and rust into orange freckles within weeks.
Use one of these methods instead, in order of preference:
- Electric metal shears or a nibbler, which cut cleanly and leave the coating intact.
- Tin snips for short cuts and notches, which work fine on 26 gauge with a bit of hand strength.
- A circular saw fitted with a metal cutting carbide blade, run slowly with the panel well supported.
Measure your finished backsplash opening, then cut the panel about a quarter inch smaller in each direction so it drops in without binding. Run a file along every cut edge to knock down the burr, then brush galvanising touch up paint along those raw edges. Bare steel at a cut line is the single most common place for a panel to start rusting.
Fastening the panel to the frame
Position the panel with a rib landing where you want it visually, because an off centre rib is the kind of detail you will notice every time you use the bench.
Drive the self drilling screws through the flat sections of the panel, right beside a rib rather than through the crown of it. Fastening in the flat pulls the metal tight against the timber, while fastening through a rib crown tends to dimple the panel. Space the screws roughly every 12 inches along the top rail, the middle rail and the two rear legs.
Do not overtighten. The EPDM washer should compress just enough to sit flat. If it squeezes out sideways or the metal starts to dish around the screw head, you have gone too far.
Finishing the edges
Raw panel edges are sharp enough to cut skin, and they are the first thing your forearm will find when you reach across the bench. Cap them.
Aluminium angle is the cheapest solution. Cut lengths to fit the top edge and both sides, then fix them with short self drilling screws or exterior adhesive. J-channel from the same siding range is a tidier match if you can get a short length, and it slots over the edge without any visible fixings. Either way, the goal is that no exposed cut edge remains anywhere you might touch.
Making the backsplash earn its keep
Once the panel is on, the vertical surface behind your work area becomes genuinely useful storage. This is where a steel panel pays you back.
Consider adding a narrow shelf across the top rail for pots of twine and labels, magnetic strips to hold secateurs and trowels, S-hooks hung from the ribs of a corrugated panel, or a small hose clip so the spray nozzle always lives in one place. Because metal siding panels are structurally stiff, they will carry light tool weight without any additional backing.
Keeping it looking good
Maintenance is minimal, which is the whole point, but a few habits will add years to the finish.
Rinse the panel down at the end of a heavy potting session so fertiliser salts do not sit on the coating overnight. Check the screw washers once a year and replace any that have hardened or cracked. If a tool chips the paint, touch it up quickly rather than waiting, since a coating chip is where corrosion starts. Keep the timber frame sealed with an exterior oil or stain on a normal schedule, because the metal will comfortably outlast the wood if you let it.
Common questions
Can I use an offcut from a roofing job instead of a siding panel? Yes, in most cases. Roofing and siding panels are often the same product marketed for different orientations. Check that the coating is rated for exterior exposure and that the profile is not so deep that it swallows your bench depth.
Will the metal get too hot in full sun? A dark coloured panel in direct afternoon sun will get warm to the touch, in the same way a car bonnet does. If your bench sits in an exposed spot, choose a lighter colour or a bare galvanised finish, both of which reflect far more heat.
How much panel do I actually need? For the bench dimensions in this guide, a single piece measuring 48 by 24 inches. Most suppliers sell metal siding panels in longer lengths, so you will usually be cutting one panel down and keeping the remainder for a second project.
Do I need to seal behind the panel? Not for a bench that lives under cover. If your potting bench sits fully exposed to weather, run a strip of self adhesive flashing membrane behind the panel so any water that gets past the fasteners has somewhere to drain rather than sitting against the timber.
